UX Budget Planning for 2027: A Founder's Guide With Real Numbers

Planning

Summary

A practical 2027 UX budget for a Saudi startup or scale-up is 10–20% of your product development budget. In real numbers: a seed or Series A team typically needs SAR 150,000–400,000 per year, usually as two or three focused projects such as an audit, an onboarding redesign, and quarterly usability testing. A growth-stage company with continuous design work should plan SAR 500,000–1,200,000, split between one in-house designer and agency support for research and audits. The justification for the board writes itself: Forrester's oft-cited finding puts the return on UX investment at up to $100 for every $1 spent, and in our own GCC projects the payback usually shows up in one of three places: higher conversion, lower support tickets, or faster development because engineers stop rebuilding the same screens. Below is a line-item template you can copy into your 2027 plan, with Saudi market rates for each line.

How much should a startup budget for UX in 2027?

Stage

Annual UX budget (SAR)

What it buys

Pre-seed / bootstrapped

40,000–120,000

One focused audit + one critical flow redesign

Seed / Series A

150,000–400,000

Audit, onboarding redesign, quarterly testing rounds

Series B–C / growth

500,000–1,200,000

One in-house designer + agency research and audit support

Enterprise

1,500,000+

Design function + external audits, accessibility, benchmarking

The bands reflect Saudi market rates we see in our own proposals and regional rate cards (KSA agencies list at 10–10–100 per hour on DesignRush as of September 2026). Where you land inside a band depends on how much user research you include, and research is the part you should cut last.

What line items go into a UX budget?

Six lines, in the order you should protect them:

  1. Research and testing β€” the evidence layer. Quarterly moderated testing rounds, SAR 25k–50k each.

  2. Audit β€” once a year minimum for any live product. Current Saudi pricing: SAR 12k–90k by scope.

  3. Design execution β€” the flows and screens that come out of findings.

  4. Design system maintenance β€” 10–15% of design capacity, or consistency decays.

  5. UX writing and Arabic localization β€” small line, outsized trust impact.

  6. Contingency β€” 10%. Something always breaks during a launch.

What is the ROI of UX investment?

The famous figure is Forrester's: up to $100 returned per $1 invested in UX. Treat it as an upper bound, then build your own case from your numbers. The three places payback shows up in our GCC projects:

  • Conversion. A checkout fix that lifts completion from 61% to 68% on SAR 2M of monthly GMV pays for a year of UX work by February.

  • Support deflection. If 15% of tickets are "how do I…" questions, fixing the flows that generate them cuts ticket volume at the source.

  • Engineering time. Products built from tested designs stop rebuilding the same screens. Ask your engineering lead how many sprints last year were rework.

Should I hire in-house or use an agency in 2027?

The 12-month math, including recruitment time and the cost of a wrong hire, is in our agency vs in-house comparison. Short version: under SAR 300k of annual UX work, buy projects. Above it, hire your first senior designer and keep an agency for research depth.

How do I present a UX budget to the board?

One slide. Current funnel metric, the friction causing it (from evidence, not opinion), the cost to fix, the projected lift, and the payback period. Boards fund payback periods. "We need better UX" gets a sympathetic nod; "this SAR 45k audit pays back in seven weeks if it recovers a third of checkout drop-off" gets a signature.

What can I cut if the budget gets slashed?

Cut in this order: new feature design for unvalidated ideas (validate first), visual polish passes, extra testing rounds. Protect research and the audit. The uncomfortable truth is that a small evidence budget prevents large wrong-build budgets, and the wrong builds are where the real money goes.
