DESIGN.md is a format specification from Google Labs for describing a visual identity to coding agents. Tokens in YAML front matter give agents exact values; markdown prose explains why those values exist and how to apply them.
1. Save the file as DESIGN.md in the root of your repository.
2. Point your agent to it, for example with a line in AGENTS.md: โFollow the design system in DESIGN.md.โ
3. Validate it with npx @google/design.md lint DESIGN.md, and run the linter in CI when the file changes.
A markdown file that describes a visual identity to coding agents. It combines machine-readable design tokens in YAML front matter with human-readable rationale in ## sections.
Overview, Colors, Typography, Layout, Elevation & Depth, Shapes, Components, and Doโs and Donโts. Sections can be omitted, but those present must appear in that order.
Run the official linter: npx @google/design.md lint DESIGN.md. It validates structure, catches broken token references and checks WCAG contrast ratios.
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
Not yet. The specification is published by Google Labs as version โalphaโ, so details may change. Re-check your file against the latest spec and linter.
