Visual Hierarchy Tactics: Guide the Eye, Not Just the Layout
UI Design

Users do not read interfaces. They scan them, following paths your hierarchy lays down whether you designed them or not. UI Design Tactics treats hierarchy as what it really is: attention management. Here are the tactics that matter most.
How do you create a focal point?
Every screen needs one thing the eye lands on first. Not two, not zero. The focal point is earned through position (top-left in LTR, top-right in RTL), size, and contrast, in that order. The common failure is competing primaries: two bright buttons, three bold headlines, a banner fighting a hero. When everything demands attention, attention fragments, and the user experiences the screen as work.
How do users actually scan?
In patterns shaped by decades of reading behavior. Text-heavy pages get an F-pattern: across the top, down the left edge. Landing pages get a Z. Placing key actions and information along these natural paths is free usability. Fighting them is expensive confusion.
How do you grade importance?
By volume, not variety. The professional move is de-emphasis: metadata goes grey and small, secondary buttons go quiet, and the primary action stands alone. Amateurs emphasize by adding (borders, badges, colors); professionals emphasize by removing everything that competes.
Then apply the squint test. Squint at your screen until details blur. If the most important element no longer stands out, the hierarchy failed, no matter how good it looks at full resolution.
Why does Tremoloo share this book?
Because hierarchy failures are among the highest-impact, lowest-cost fixes we report in audits, and this book trains designers to spot them. The squint test alone has improved more screens than most redesigns.
Is your interface guiding attention or scattering it? A UX audit will show you in days.
