Mavens, Connectors and Salesmen: Designing for the People Who Spread Products

UX Strategy

Law of the Few, mavens connectors salesmen, product virality, word of mouth design, The Tipping Point, referral UX, product adoption

Summary

Malcolm Gladwell's Law of the Few says epidemics spread through rare types:

  • Mavens (knowledge accumulators who share what they know)

  • Connectors (people with wide social networks)

  • Salesmen (natural persuaders).

Product implication: adoption spreads when you deliberately serve these three.

  • Give mavens depth worth discovering (documentation, power features, honest data)

  • Give connectors something easy to pass along (share flows, referral loops)

  • Give salesmen evidence worth pitching (results, comparisons).

Design for the few who spread, and the many follow.

Products do not spread evenly through populations. Malcolm Gladwell’s Law of the Few, from The Tipping Point, holds that epidemics depend on rare individuals with unusual social gifts. For product teams, this is a design brief: some users matter enormously to growth, and you can design for them deliberately.

Who are the three types?

Mavens accumulate knowledge and share it compulsively. They read your documentation, find your power features, and tell everyone what they discovered. They are your unpaid product evangelists, and they are motivated by knowing, not by rewards.

Connectors know everyone. Their networks are wide and their casual mentions reach further than your marketing. They spread things because spreading is their social gift.

Salesmen persuade. They do not just share products; they sell them, with energy that overcomes skepticism. Your most convincing reviewers and referrers are salesmen at work.

How do you design for each?

  • Mavens want depth. Give them substance to discover: thorough documentation, honest specifications, advanced features worth mastering. A maven who finds depth tells everyone; a maven who finds marketing fluff tells everyone that too.

  • Connectors want ease of passing. Sharing flows, referral mechanics, content formatted to travel. Every extra step in your share flow is growth left on the table.

  • Salesmen want evidence. Results, comparisons, stories that survive retelling. Arm them with proof and they convert skeptics you cannot reach.

What is the strategic lesson?

Word of mouth is not weather. It is a channel with known carriers, and those carriers can be served by design decisions. Products that treat sharing as an afterthought forfeit their cheapest growth engine.

Why does Tremoloo share this book?

Because growth questions appear in most product engagements, and this framework turns “go viral” from a wish into a design problem with users to serve.

Want sharing designed into your product, not bolted on? Our product design team can build it in.
