Trigger, Action, Variable Reward, Investment: Using the Hook Model Ethically

The Hook Model is powerful, which means it can be pointed in two directions. Nir Eyal addresses this directly in Hooked, and the ethical dimension is not a footnote. It is a design requirement that more teams should take seriously.
What is Eyal’s own ethical test?
He offers the Manipulation Matrix, built on two questions. First: would you use the product yourself? Second: does it materially improve the user’s life? Products that pass both are facilitators, helping people do what they already want to do: exercise, save, learn, connect. Products that fail both are dealers, and the comparison is intentional. The matrix gives teams a fast conscience check before a single screen is designed.
What does ethical habit design look like in practice?
The habit serves the user’s goal. Duolingo’s streak serves learning. A streak that exists only to inflate daily active users serves the metric, not the user.
Rewards stay meaningful. Variable reward works because anticipation engages. When the reward is empty, confetti and badges for nothing, users eventually notice the manipulation and leave with resentment.
Notifications stay honest. An alert should fire when something genuinely warrants attention, not when engagement dips.
Stopping cues exist. Infinite scroll removes every natural endpoint. Ethical alternatives, batching, summaries, pause prompts, respect that users have lives.
Why does ethics pay commercially?
Because habits built on user value survive, and habits built on exploitation churn. Users are increasingly literate about manipulation, and regulators increasingly are too. Retention you would defend in public is the only durable kind.
Why does Tremoloo share this book?
Because behavioral design is part of modern product work, and we believe it should be practiced in the open, with the user’s interest in the room. This book lets us have that conversation with clients honestly.
Want engagement mechanics you would defend in public? Our product design team can design them with you.
