How to Run a Cross-Channel Design Workshop (Lessons from Orchestrating Experiences)
UX Strategy
cross-channel workshop, experience mapping workshop, collaborative design, service design workshop, journey mapping facilitation, Orchestrating Experiences
The hardest problems in customer experience are not design problems. They are alignment problems. Orchestrating Experiences devotes much of its method to workshops because the authors know a truth every senior designer learns the hard way: the map is not the deliverable. The alignment the map creates is.
Why a workshop instead of a document?
A journey map emailed around a company gets skimmed and forgotten. A journey map built by twelve people from six departments in the same room becomes shared truth. When the head of support places a sticky note about refund complaints next to marketing’s promise of instant refunds, no one needs a presentation to see the problem. Collaborative mapping turns abstract customer pain into a room full of people who just discovered it together.
How do you structure the workshop?
Invite the whole chain. Marketing, product, sales, support, operations. Anyone who touches the customer, and at least one person with budget authority.
Bring evidence, not opinions. Real quotes, support tickets, analytics, session recordings. The journey should be built from what customers actually do.
Map across channels on one wall. Plot stages horizontally, then touchpoints, customer emotions, and the teams responsible beneath.
Mark the breaks. Look for contradictions, dead ends, and handoffs where context is lost. These are your highest-value findings.
Assign owners before anyone leaves. An insight without an owner is decoration.
What do designers gain from running one?
Facilitating these sessions changes how organizations see designers. You stop being the person who makes screens and become the person who reveals how the business actually behaves. That repositioning, from decorator to orchestrator, is one of the most durable career moves the book offers.
Why does Tremoloo share this book?
Its workshop methods mirror how we run discovery with clients: evidence first, everyone in the room, handoffs treated as first-class design problems. When we facilitate these sessions, the map on the wall often surprises executives more than any usability finding. Sharing the book is our way of spreading a practice we have watched work.
